This is the Twin Galaxies setting and have been the default one in Mame for a long time (even if default became 8 pods somewhere between m36b10-m37b2)

Robert Mruczek offered in 2004 a bounty for scoring 20,000 points on the game (still starting with 16 pods).
An interesting article by Tim Skelly, the programmer of this game, which describes in detail the behavior of the enemies, is available there.
There are 6 forms of attackers (with base values from 10 to 60, and all worth 10 points more on bonus level +10, 20 more points on level +20, etc ...) ; if you kill all the enemies in the attack wave (2 in the first cycle, 3 in all cycles after), you proceed to the next form of attacker. If you kill part of the attack wave, but let one or two escape with pods, the same form of attacker comes again. If all enemies in the attack wave steal pods, you go back to the previous form of attacker.
