The "time record" given when you complete a stage is the TOTAL TIME of all stages which has been cleared before.
So score will be (number of stages clear)x10000 - (time record given at the end of last stage complete in seconds).

Example :
If you finish 4th stage with time record = 3'30 and lose in the 5th stage, then score = 40000-210=39790
