'zlk' emailed me a bunch of recordings that he had downloaded and kept, so they're now back in place. I still need 82 more though. Check the list of missing recordings and if you have any of them please email them to the site using marp at ztnet dot com instead of the usual address - this will save my poor modem having to download them and re-upload them.
Aaarrrggghhh!!!
It looks like there has been a disk crash in the server that hosts MARP. 217 recordings just disappeared. I have mailed the site administrators asking what's going on, but at the moment it looks possible that anything uploaded between 21:00 GMT on Thu Jun 5 and 18:30 GMT on Tue Jun 10 18:30:24 2003 has been lost.
A list of the affected recordings can be found here.
Knockout 3 has begun.
You can now start uploading your qualification recording for Ultimate Tennis [ultennis]. All you need to do is win one match. Simple, huh? Here's the details.
When I checked today, we had over 50,000 recordings, all stored in a single directory on the server. This isn't a good situation, big directories are very inefficient, so I am reorganising the recordings, moving them into sub-directories. This will take a few hours to finish, and will break any existing direct links to recordings.
Techy note: the recordings are being moved as follows: take the recording's file name, without the '.zip' extension. Generate the MD5 digest of that name, take the first 3 hex digits, and that gives you the 3 directories that the file is moved to. For example, take the file that used to be located here: "http://marp.retrogames.com/inp/zw_gorf_9220_tgdmame66.zip". The MD5 digest of the string "zw_gorf_9220_tgdmame66" is "f6bdd751424b03956e8c06ac09163aff", so the recording is moved to "http://marp.retrogames.com/inp/f/6/b/zw_gorf_9220_tgdmame66.zip". To generate MD5 digests in Python, I do the following:>>> import md5 >>> m = md5.new() >>> m.update("zw_gorf_9220_tgdmame66") >>> m.hexdigest() 'f6bdd751424b03956e8c06ac09163aff'Your language will probably have some similar library.
Yes, I know this is late. The following comes from Skito:
The Alpha Blocking vote has passed, revealing that everyone wants a clean, fair, competitive site that awards AlphaMAME submisions more than any other mame. What does this mean for MARPers? Basically it means if you plan on getting a high score and want to keep it at the number 1 position use AlphaMAME. Or your score could get blocked by another AlphaMAME submitter.
The 6th MARP Tournament is underway! You can now upload INPs for the tournament games. The games are as follows:
Boulderdash [Part 1] Dangun Feveron [Time Attack] Psychic 5 Ixion (Prototype) Final Fight (World) Parodius DA! (Japan) Pleasure Goal Wit's (Japan)
More info if you click the Tournament link in the top frame. And most importantly, have fun!
WCC 2 is over, and Phil Lamat is the champion. Full details are here.
Ok, now it's time to vote for the games you want in T6. You can vote for any three games you want from AlphaMAME 0.62 (that's 3,599 total games) that haven't been in any previous MARP competition. Go here to cast your votes.
Lagavulin, the tournament coordinator, has posted a couple of important polls at the Tournament Forum. Make sure you check them out and vote.
I just made a long-awaited change to the site to allow 64 bit scores. The scores used to be stored in a signed 32 bit column, giving a maximum allowed score of around 2 billion. The maximum should not be a lot higher. It is quite possible that I've missed some changes that I should have made. Please let me know if you find any.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Oh, and some more Tips and stuff have been added to the weird stuff page over the last couple of days.
WCC has ended and LeClaqueurFou is the overall winner. Congratulations to LCF on a fine win.
Here's a quick reminder to check out this post, and vote on the scoring system you want for baseball games.
Donut has submitted another Paperboy glitch for the Tips page.
Pika163 has submitted an easter egg for Out Run.
WCC Round 9 has ended, and LeClaqueurFou won it on Power Spikes II, and now has an unbeatable lead in the championship. The round 10 game is World Heroes Pefect
WCC Round 8 has ended, and Frankie won this round with 4,256,900 on Pop 'n Bounce. The round 9 game is Power Spikes II [pspikes2]. But before you go playing it, read this first.
More weird stuff added. This time the Paperboy lawnmower trick, courtesy of Alex Weir.
The Tips, Tricks, and Easter Eggs page has seen another update, with Phil Lamat adding the GNG infinite time trick.
The Tips, Tricks, and Easter Eggs page has been updated with two new recordings, one for Alpine Ski, and the other for Street Fighter II.
UPDATE: Three more recordings added, courtesy of Joey.
WCC Round 7 has ended, and Joey wins with a score of 309,270 on Zero Wing. The next round is Pop 'n Bounce.
The Deca2002 results are in, and this year's winner is Anders Svensson. Again. Congrats on the fine win. For more info, go here.
WCC Round 6 has ended and LeClaqueurFou wins it with a score on Lot Lot of 191,080. Round 7's game will be another shooter, Zero Wing. Anyone who says "that phrase" will get anally raped by BBH. ;)
We have a new editor entering our ranks. Let's all welcome Frankie to the position, replacing Gameboy9 who retired a while back.
WCC Round 5 has ended and Kale wins this round, scoring 924,890 on Liquid Kids. The game for Round 6 will be Lot Lot [lotlot].
WCC Round 4 has now ended, and looks like TJT has won this round.
For those of you are wondering just what WCC is, it's the "Week Challenge Championship", and is being run by Phil Lamat. It's a ten round competition with each round lasting 7 days. For more info (or if you've forgotten it, again). here's the link to WCC.
The following rule changes are now in effect:
4-D Warriors [4dwarrio] - no leeching allowed until the 3rd round.
Championship V'Ball [vball, vball2pj] - Continues are now allowed, assuming you don't lose of course. Scoring will be like the soccer games.
Super Mario Brothers 2 [pc_smb2] - Scoring is 1000 points per stages completed plus 1 point per second left on the PC10 clock.
Well, I guess I won the vote, huh? So, in case you don't know, I'm Barry Rodewald, and I'm your new Assistant Web Maintainer. For those that care for results, the vote ended up at 4-2. But, now it's time for business.
Click here for an important announcement. I'll keep it at that.
On this day, MARP clicked it's 400,000th visitor according that NedStat banner link. Oh yeah... I also updated the MARP Totals Report April 3rd - we're closing in on 25 billion raw points scored.
A whole gang of MARP players formed the What if MARP were the Simpsons? I'm Kent Brockman signing off for now.
Tecmo Bowl will now be played as play until you lose a game - 100 points for winning each game + points for - points against you. Using 4 seconds / unit & 3900 seconds is pivotal here. This was approved as a 5-0 vote on the message board.
The 2nd Lemmings vote is more than expired. 99 credits will be the limit, at 5 minutes / credit (10 minutes in Lemmings time, use F2 to get into service mode to take care of this, the recording will be fine.) We will score it at 1 point / lemming saved and 100 points for each credit left if you finish. If the game says you failed a stage, the game is over right there. REMEMBER, START AT STAGE 1 AND ONLY STAGE 1. Let the competition open once again!
For the NCAA Bracket freaks: download this file - then email me with the .PIK file that you create with your picks. This is just for bragging rights, using the ESPN scoring system, as I remember it, and, of course, participation is voluntary. :)
The Lemmings vote is more than expired. 6-2 on the use more than one credit rule. 2/3 was achieved, and so more than one credit is allowed. The 1/lemming saved, -10/continue, when negative game over bit scored 4-4, this motion fails. MARP score: (100 * starting level) + (25 - killed lemmings + saved lemmings) and variations was scored 2-6, and this motion fails. 1/lemming, 10/stage, -5/continue scoring system was scored 4-4 and this motion fails. Well, except the one credit bit, we have a. no scoring system except 1/lemming saved, and b. no way to determine game over. We will debate on the new MARP forum
We will begin the use of the new message board. The link on the banner page will be changed on the 12th of March. You MUST register to participate on most boards!
Barry Rodewald's provided playback/recording xmame scripts for the X11 MAME build. He claims that it should be easily modified for other builds. (xgl, SDL, svgalib...) Take a gander if you're a linux geek. :)
